“Football was always a problem but [the] worst of all was the World Cup” 🔴 During the 2018 World Cup, calls to the NSPCC about domestic abuse jumped 33%

As well as being victims, children can also be weaponised against the mother by an abuser, says Dr Katz, either by manipulating the children to turn against her, attempting to undermine, isolate or humiliate her, or abusing the children to cause further distress. “There will be many different acts of child abuse and neglect as part of the coercive control”, she says. “It’s all part and parcel of maintaining dominance, keeping control, and keeping everyone compliant.

It is easy to see how these different methods of control could be intensified during a sporting tournament such as the World Cup, a time where the regime set by the perpetrator may be even more strictly controlled, centred around match times – and outcomes. There is debate as to whether winning or losing has an impact. Clare Kelly, the associate head of policy at the NSPCC and a former police officer, said that actually the final score was irrelevant.
