through Thursday, and slick roads made for treacherous travel conditions. Airport cancellations piled up, and mail delivery was halted for many people. Public transportation continued to experience significant delays.
North Texans weren’t affected by power outages nearly as much as those in other parts of the state: As of 6 p.m. 120,000 Oncor customers were experiencing outages, but only about 350 were in Dallas-Fort Worth. Tens of thousands of customers were without power elsewhere in the state, including 160,000 in Austin and 50,000 near Tyler.
“This system that has been causing all of this mess over us will finally move on,” said Hunter Reeves, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Fort Worth office. “We’ll see roads and traffic flow get back to normal Friday.”The storm’s icy grip left some residents strapped for groceries Wednesday.
She said she didn’t even attempt to drive. Although she’s had experience driving in winter weather in Colorado, she said, the conditions in Dallas appeared more dangerous. Jason Evans, a Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman, said emergency crews were dispatched to 14 crashes as of Wednesday afternoon. By comparison, the department responded to 286 crashes from Monday to early Tuesday.
Matt Zavadsky, a spokesman for MedStar, which provides emergency care and transport in the Fort Worth area, thanked residents for staying off the roads.
