Of course, some of the negativity about sex scenes was warranted. The whole idea of simulated sex came under a lot of scrutiny during the height of the #MeToo era, and rightly so. Actresses all over the world were expected to take their clothes off and perform in front of an audience, and being left with scenes that made them feel humiliated, even traumatised. Since then there are plenty of people who’ve suggested that there’s no place for sex scenes in films at all.
The most frustrating part of the discourse around sex scenes is the suggestion that now we can’t just treat actresses like meat puppets, there’s no point in trying to have them at all. In April, Quentin Tarantino was discussing his lack of sex scenes, and said: “The truth is that, in real life, it’s a pain to shoot sex scenes, everyone is very tense. And if it was already a bit problematic to do it before, now [post #MeToo] it is even more so.
It’s such a lazy response. Lots of scenes are stressful to shoot – anything meaningful or intense or violent is going to be hard to get right on camera, but sex is a part of life, and films are supposed to depict the human experience. If we strip out anything that is painful or uncomfortable to capture, then there are going to be very few – if any – stories to tell. Evenhas its harrowing moments.
