I remember wanting to vomit as the plane took off. I felt anxious; this was not a situation I expected to find myself in. Thankfully, she did.
Thankful for my credit card, regular income, and an immigration status that allowed me to travel to the U.S. without having to apply for a visa, I made all of my bookings, took time off work, and I was in New York City within what was probably just two weeks but felt like an eternity. When I woke up, I sat with a group of women—all of us in light-colored hospital gowns— and sipped orange juice from a plastic cup. I returned to my hotel, feeling woozy but relieved. A week later, I was back in Kigali and getting on with my life.
