The 'new 'it' sport for the freshwater enthusiast' is coming to Huntsville. Kayak Bass Fishing will hold national championships and tournaments in Alabama's largest city.
The Tennessee River at Ditto Landing in Huntsville. Kayak Bass Fishing announced Sept. 14, 2022, it was bringing its headquarters and future tournaments to Ditto Landing. So you could, ahem, say that Huntsville, uh, lured a new sport to the Rocket City and made, well, a big catch.
It’s also a boost to the effort to increase visitors to Ditto Landing and the KBF headquarters will be rolled into the park’s evolving master plan. Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle hailed kayak bass fishing as the “new ‘it’ sport for the freshwater enthusiast.”It’s a new role for the Rocket City – long defined by engineers and sprawling growth. But it’s one that Hoover expects to prosper as well in a competitive setting that’s doesn’t require the financial investment of most fishing tournaments.
“Three of the top 20 bass lakes in the country are within 30 minutes of here,” Hoover said. “Probably six of the top 15 are here. And every one of these lakes at one time or another has been the No. 1 bass lake in the country. And then you’ve got the Tennessee River, all its backwaters, all of the wildlife management areas and preserves and resources and the creeks and rivers in North Alabama are some of the best in the world.
Even when tournaments are not in Huntsville, the city will still be prominent. The headquarters, Hoover said, will largely be a media center where podcasts and internet broadcasts can originate no matter the location of the tournament.
