Susan Buck says she had to find a way to make money quickly once she found out she would receive the state pension
Another problem occurred when I finally turned 66. The Government turned around and told us the NHS had contracted us out of Serps [the State Earnings-Related Pension Scheme], so they had never paid their bit into the pension pot. This means that because I paid less national 0nsurance, I do not have the additional retirement funds provided by an Serp. Government ministers just feel like they have to tweak the NHS as a right of passage.
I hoped to live for at least a few more years, so I was looking around for something to do to help make money. Some people are great at making cakes and all sorts of stuff, but I’m not that person.I could even make them sitting down if I get too doddery and old, I thought. I’m hoping it will make around £100 a week but I need to buy some expensive new equipment, so at the moment I’m not making much money.
It keeps the brain cells working and I’m glad to have it, but I shouldn’t really have to do it to earn a living. I’m at the stage in my life when it should be a hobby, not a necessity. I’ve got three grandchildren but my family are 400 miles away in Scotland, where I’m desperate to move back to, but I just can’t afford private rent. And there’s no chance of a council house. I could be of use, helping out babysitting or taking the children to school, but I’m stuck here. It’s devastating.
