The scene is both tense and infuriating, just as Hitchcock wanted.
Few movies bend time and minds like Alfred Hitchcock’s 1958 masterpiece “Vertigo.”
Shot on the streets of San Francisco in the fall of 1957, the twisting kaleidoscopic thriller sees Jimmy Stewart’s Scottie lose his marbles over the ghost of Kim Novak’s Madeleine . Since its release, the cinematography, dreamy tone and complex twisting plot have gained a reverence and critique usually saved for the likes of Caravaggio.
To coincide with the presentation of a pristine 70mm print at the Castro Theatre this weekend, I decided to retread two of the most gorgeous, tense and maddening sequences in the film — the car chases, or more accurately, the extremely slow pursuits around Nob Hill. The first starts just 18 minutes into the movie, after our retired and shamed detective Scottie is hired by a strange man to follow an even stranger woman, Madeleine Elster, who may or may not be haunted by the ghost of a tragic Gold Rush-era suicidal dame, Carlotta Valdes.
We start at Madeleine's home — the Brocklebank Apartments at the crest of Nob Hill on the corner of Sacramento and Mason streets. Scottie parks his white DeSoto Firedome on Mason in the shadow of the Flood Mansion and reads the San Francisco Examiner incognito. The woman of his obsession, Kim Novak in her iconic gray wool suit and pencil skirt , emerges from the building and climbs into her gleaming green Jaguar Mark VIII.
