💬 I regret getting a divorce - I wish I had been a better listener
BySimon* had been married for a decade when his wife filed for divorce 10 years ago. Each of them had children from previous relationships. Now aged 65, he looks back on his marriage breakdown and the lessons he has learnt.
When you get married, somewhere along the line, you become three entities. There’s you, the other person, and then there’s the concept of both of you together., your entire history changes. You lose what you thought you knew about yourself. You may have thought you knew yourself as empathetic, kind and generous. You thought they knew you as that person too. Then you find out that actually, that’s not how the other person experienced you at all. There’s almost a sense of betrayal. You feel like you have lost this shared history, and this shared understanding that you both had.was happening to me. I did not see it coming. We had been married for 10 years and I thought I had been a good husband.
I have regrets about the way I handled my emotions after we ended things. I would say my biggest regret is probably how distraught I was. I could have been calmer, but I just fell apart. In fact, I’d say I fell apart for seven years. I carried on living, but I was broken at night. In the day all I did was work. It was the worst time of my life.
