There are some campgrounds and a small lodge inside the park; a handful of cabins and the next closest lodgings are more than 30 minutes away.
As we started along the trail, a placard explained the natural history of the feature, and a girl who looked about 10 was breaking it down for her family. “So this is a volcano. These mountains are the volcano,” she said matter-of-factly. “We’re on the edge of a volcano.”In other words, where the lake is now, a 12,000-foot mountain once stood.
