Egelstaff also points out that England being in the final has propelled coverage of women’s football on to the front pages, with many young girls in Scotland just as likely to be glued to their televisions on Sunday as their English peers.
“If they see an English girl doing this – why can’t they do it? That’s such a new thing, that little girls can genuinely believe they can make a career out of women’s football. Until really recently it’s just not seemed like an option.” However, he draws the line at wanting them to beat Germany and win the tournament – and says he is irritated by their nickname. “The minute they called themselves the Lionesses, I thought ‘There, they’ve spoilt it again’,” he says.
“There are those of us that just want it to reflect well on women and bring on young players,” he adds. “I think the spirit of the tournament has been so different from the men’s, and that’s reflected in the coverage, which hasn’t alienated Scots in the way the men’s coverage does.”
