Forecasters said 14-21 named storms are likely, with six to 10 of those becoming hurricanes and three to six of those becoming major hurricanes, which are Category 3 or stronger storms. “I think all the signs are certainly pointing to an above-normal year numbers-wise. There are a lot of signals in favor of having an above-normal activity, and so the NOAA outlook wasn’t a surprise,” said Jason Beaman, the new meteorologist in charge at the National Weather Service in Mobile.That’s just the forecast for the number of storms.
Sally caused widespread wind, storm surge and flooding across coastal Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. Flood and wind damage also extended well inland into south and central parts of Alabama. Beaman said those along the coast have a great resource in their local emergency management agencies.
