Writing in the Sunday Mail, First Minister Humza Yousaf has admitted the Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election result and vowed to rebuild trust in his party
The Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election was a big disappointment for the SNP. I’m not going to pretend otherwise.
Something that should concern us all - whether we won or lost - is the low turnout in the by-election, at just 37.2per cent. As well as the malign effects of UK government photo-ID rules that suppress voting, the poor turnout tells us that a sizeable majority of people didn’t feel the need to vote for anyone, or even see the point.
To rebuild trust with voters who didn’t come out for us last Thursday - or who have moved away from the SNP - we have to understand how, why and where trust has been lost.
