Hudson legislators introduce Liberty State Park bill; critics pan it as putting the state park up for sale
“We are trying to move things forward in the right way. Everyone looked at it. The governor looked at it. We are trying to do the right thing. We are not trying to hurt anybody,” Sampson told The Jersey Journal Tuesday. ”We are trying to not exclude anyone.
The task force is also responsible for addressing the need for “environmental justice and social equity to ensure equal access to the park for public use and enjoyment of conservation areas, open space, and recreational areas.”But environmentalist and former president of the New Jersey Sierra Club Jeff Tittel said the bill is really about economic development and promoting jobs and commercial interest; everything else is all a smokescreen.
“What I find so shameful is that they dropped it now, during the budget season when everyone is going to be paying attention to 100 other bills from gun control to women’s rights, so they could try to sneak this through. My concern is that this bill is wired and they put it out now during the budget season so the public doesn’t see it and that they have lined up key legislators to back the bill so they can try to push it right through.
In 2015, the DEP released an 18-page report outlining potential development projects — which included a hotel, amusement park and amphitheater — to be built on 38 of Liberty State Park’s 1,200 acres. In 2020, language tucked deep in the 110-page spending bill permits the state Department of Environmental Protection to solicit both for-profit companies and non-profit entities for investments in state parks.
