The same day President Trump discussed Huawei with U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May, saying that the company would not be allowed to come between the two allies, Huawei's chairman looked to offer the U.S. a 'no-spy deal' in an attempt to ease the pressure on the company.
"We are willing to sign no-spy agreements with countries," Huawei Chairman Liang Hua told reporters in Shenzhen when asked if the company is open to the same kind of agreement with the U.S. that had reportedly been offered to the U.K. and Germany.
The U.S. blacklist against Huawei has hit the headlines and the company in the last fortnight, with the ramifications on the Chinese giant's fast-growth smartphone business being of particular significance. The irony is that the U.S. action stemmed from 5G network equipment, not consumer devices, and it's that equipment that's also at the heart of the U.S. concerns with the U.K.
Huawei is now looking to Beijing for support in helping overturn a situation that if not existential for the company, certainly threatens to bring a decade of flawless growth to an end. Prior to the U.S. sanctions, Huawei had been looking at chasing down Samsung for the top spot in global smartphone sales, even as it cemented its dominant position in global networking equipment.
