Huawei is wasting its time fighting accusations from Washington that it’s a national security threat. Quitting the United States would get rid of a headache, writes GinaChon.
The U.S. Senate is considering a bill that would provide $1 billion for rural carriers to replace equipment provided by firms deemed to be a national-security threat, like China’s Huawei Technologies. The House of Representatives passed the bill in December.
Also that month, Huawei sued the U.S. Federal Communications Commission over a rule prohibiting U.S. firms from using federal subsidies to purchase equipment from the Chinese telecoms firm and smaller rival ZTE. Vodafone and BT, Britain’s two biggest telecoms companies, are preparing to lobby the government in support of Huawei’s involvement in the UK’s 5G network, according to Sky News on Jan. 17.
