Mark Harper also tells MPs that delays to the troubled high-speed rail project will not save money
It would mean passengers being left at a hub six miles from the planned terminal at Euston, and having to get onto the Elizabeth Line to finish their journey.
Project operator HS2 Ltd says the first stretch will open between 2029 and 2033, initially only between Old Oak Common, six miles north-west of central London, and Birmingham. Asked by Conservative MP Greg Smith whether the pause meant HS2 would “ever actually come into London? or would it bedirect that’s that useful to anyone?”, the Transport Secretary insisted the Government remained committed to HS2 coming to the centre of the capital.
He said it reflected “that you have a budget in each year, everybody listening to this has to live within their annual budget, as well as a budget over time. We’ve had to make some sensible decisions about how you make those decisions.”following the decision to rephase the scheme.
