HPD sergeant on potential Galleria mass shooter: 'I decided to fight'
Prosecutors have credited Houston Police Department Sgt. Kendrick Simpo for thwarting what could have devolved into a mass shooting at the Galleria amid a dance competition for young girls.As Sgt. Kendrick Simpo stalked a gun-slinging man in the Galleria, he assessed his surroundings. He was in the open with nowhere to find distance or cover should his attempt to stop the man take a turn for the worse.
The sergeant also testified Monday in a misdemeanor disorderly conduct case against Herrera, a charge in the Criminal Court of Law No. 8 that a jury then found him guilty of. Herrera accepted a plea agreement on an unlawful carrying of a weapon charge related to a later incident at the FBI's Houston field office.
“I walked by him, and as soon as I passed him — I pushed the security officer out of the way and came up behind him and reached for the rifle,” said Simpo, who has worked off-duty security jobs at the Galleria for nearly a decade. “I caught him off guard.”
