Family members might hear screams in the background of the call, but scammers have been known to use realistic-sounding recordingsThe Federal Bureau of Investigation - Chicago Division is warning of virtual kidnapping scams targeting families in Illinois and nationwide.
"Virtual kidnappers scour the internet for targets by searching for social media posts by international travelers," the FBI said in a release. Typically, the FBI said the virtual kidnappers will request payments through a wire transfer and push families to act quickly.
