For Variety VIP+ subscribers: A guest column on how to end the writers strike by resolving the three biggest issues
We are entering the fifth week of the Writers Guild of America strike with no sign of resolution and no substantive updates on the progress of negotiations. From my vantage point, there are three key issues that need to be resolved in order for the parties to move closer to a deal.
The AMPTP has purportedly been unresponsive on the first two issues and, per the WGA, has refused to counter substantively. On the third point, the AMPTP has merely offered “regular meetings” to discuss “” and has not engaged on the specific concerns. The WGA has balked at that response. The WGA’s proposals would most benefit entry-mid-level writers, and there is validity in the notion of protecting the future of the profession. The parties should find a compromise , perhaps tiered by intended budget but with the showrunner always able to “opt out” of the minimum.
