“In the last three years, [the administration has considered] things that they previously would have rejected flat out,” said Melanie Corcoran-Freelander, the chief technology officer at Ursa Space Systems, which uses synthetic aperture radar to provide companies intelligence on things like ship movements or oil pipelines.

More space technologies that were long only available in the defense and intelligence communities are beginning to break into the commercial market -- in part because of the Trump administration’s willingness to consider such transfers, according to Melanie Corcoran-Freelander, the chief technology officer at Ursa Space Systems, which uses synthetic aperture radar to provide companies intelligence on things like ship movements or oil pipelines.

“So much of the capability is live and already in space from foreign companies that we’re now playing catch up because of policy choices,” said Corcoran-Freelander, who has spent more than 20 years in the technology sector, including as the head of a consulting company that worked with Ura and other intelligence companies.

Corcoran-Freelander also talked about why synthetic aperture radar is so useful for businesses and how Ursa maintains an even mix of men and women in a male-dominated field. We use commercial [synthetic aperture radar] … We have about 16 satellites [some belonging to foreign entities] that we leverage .. and we task these different satellites … to take images and we do the analysis.
