In their last playoff meeting, five years ago in the 2018 Finals, the scales were still unbalanced. James was still King James in Cleveland, a player who ruled the NBA landscape. Despite four straight trips to the Finals and what would ultimately be his third ring, Curry was still, to a degree, in James’ shadow.Curry is now the NBA’s alpha. He’s the one who is a reigning champion. He’s the one whose game continues to improve, even at age 35.
But then Curry became more than just a baby-faced sharpshooter. His star kept rising, his Warriors beat James and the Cavaliers in the 2015 Finals, he won the MVP award and then won another one by a unanimous vote in May of 2016. Curry’s Warriors beat James and the Cavaliers in the next two Finals, but Curry still didn’t get much credit for those victories. The national perception was that the Warriors bought their championships by bringing Kevin Durant on board, creating a Super Team. He still wasn’t considered James’ equal.
