Cartagena is a short way from the lush green golf courses popular with British tourists, but tensions are rising over arrivals from west Africa

What is happening there is symptomatic of the struggle across Spain, as the country attempts to cope with record arrivals amid a mixed response from Spaniards IN CARTAGENA, SPAIN – A short way from the lush green golf courses popular with British tourists in south-eastern Spain, Cartagena is playing host to visitors from a very different location: West Africa.

The reaction has been mixed, with the conservative mayor opposing the management of the temporary camp by Spain’s left-wing government, and residents saying migrants must find a place to live. Some 13,485 migrants from West Africa arrived in Spain by sea in the first two months of 2024, compared with 2,948 during the same period last year, a rise of 357.4 per cent.

“Considering that there is direct migration coming to the coasts of Cartagena and that the government has been unable to manage it, I think it is an error to place a migrant camp here to hold migrants who have arrived in other parts of Spain,” she told“For the fourth-biggest economy of Europe I think it is improper to deal with migrant arrivals with camps. It is inadequate to give a humanitarian reception.

“But we are worried that in some institutions there have been racist speeches which have prompted hate towards migrants,” she said in an interview withOusmane Sow spent five days in a flimsy boat travelling hundreds of miles across the Atlantic from Senegal to the Canary Islands in 2020 with 129 other people.Four years later, Mr Sow, 25, has a job with a wood company near Madrid.
