Isa Lorenzo and Rachel Rillo oversee two galleries on opposite ends of the Earth, in Manila and New York, but that wasn’t always the plan. When Lorenzo returned to her native Philippines in 2004 with an MA in photography and media studies from the New School Parsons School of Design , she wanted to be an artist, not represent them. But there was no formal gallery system in place in Manila to cultivate artists’ careers locally or internationally. “It just wasn’t the culture,” said Lorenzo.
This past September, Lorenzo and Rillo took the leap and opened an outpost in one of the world’s leading art markets, on West 24th Street in Chelsea. Their goal is to introduce Southeast Asian and Southeast Asian diaspora artists to an American audience, elevating their careers stateside., their next New York exhibition open from June 22 through August 19, looks at the idea of spiritual places through the work of sixteen Filipino artists.
