The Chicago Bears got off to a quick start in the 2022 NFL Free Agency legal tampering period. Thecame as a surprise to media and fans who were expecting general manager Ryan Poles to go on the offensive and add players around quarterback Justin Fields.
Ogunjobi was a critical signing for reasons that extend beyond just his natural ability. As the Bears flip from a 3-4 to a 4-3 defense this season, adding a player like Ogunjobi, whether via free agency or the 2022 NFL Draft, was a must. By addressing that need on the first day of the legal tampering period, Chicago can reshuffle their draft board for their first two picks—Nos. 39 and 48—this April.
Prior to the Ogunjobi signing, there was some thought that the Bears may target a prospect like Georgia’s Devonte Wyatt or UConn’s Travis Jones in the second round, but that’s no longer the case. Defense could still be in Chicago’s crosshairs, as needs remain at cornerback and safety. But if Poles’ first big signing is an indicator of his strategy in free agency, he may choose to bolster the defensive side of the ball with established veterans.
The 2022 NFL Draft is a good one for teams like the Bears who need wide receivers. It’s also a good one for offensive linemen, which is another area Poles is expected to address with a heavy investment. He made it very clear shortly after being named Chicago’s GM that he prefers a certain type of offensive lineman—literally, he has a body type he prefers—and it was equally clear that some of Chicago’s 2021 starters aren’t a match.
