How our family learnt to ski in two days 🎿
nonchalantly glided past where I sat struggling to untangle myself from what was the latest in a succession of ungainly falls. Somewhere further down the slope – if indeed it could be called a slope – my two young children continued to revel in their latest snowball fight. My wife, with the patience and focus of a Buddhist monk, followed our instructor’s every command under the pretence of knowing what she was doing, before promptly falling over.
If I’m being honest, I’m not entirely certain what compelled me to agree to a ski trip in the first place.
“It’s easy,” he said in his heavy Italian accent, before effortlessly gliding off in the latest demonstration of all that we were doing wrong. There were many words running through my mind as, once again I lay sprawled on my back like a hapless upturned tortoise, but ‘easy’ most definitely wasn’t one of them.
To add to my growing sense of frustration, while I was left cursing my ineptitude, Harrison, my seven-year-old son had, by the end of the first day, transformed from a walking avalanche risk into a mini-Hermann Maier. As a father I knew the day would come when my children would be better at certain activities than me, I just hadn’t imagined it would happen so soon. At dinner that evening I was more than a little disgruntled as he eulogised about his new favourite sport.
