Both sides of the Rutgers University contract impasse met with Gov. Phil Murphy's administration as the strike began Monday.
Gould, now a professor emeritus at Stanford Law School, said there has been a “great deal of unrest” at both public and private schools in recent years because universities have moved toward a business model that has “squeezed the regular workforce by bringing in a new contingent workforce in the form of both adjunct professors and graduate students.”
Murphy said Monday “we’ll do a version of locking the door and throwing the key away until we come up with a solution.”Herbert said Murphy “can play an essential role in resolving the differences between the parties that can end the strike.” “I agreed to the Governor’s important request while it appears that progress can be made,” the Rutgers president said.
