Labour has been accused of veering to the right on crime policies – but party insiders argue its ‘not a left vs right’ issue ChaplainChloe reports
“From our point of view, this is a Labour issue – it affects working people, communities. As in so many other areas, what we have seen over 13 years of the Tory government is a whole host of progress made in public services or in community [under the previous Labour government] completely wiped away over the years.”
One left wing source said: “Labour talks endlessly about crime and punishment without ever offering any sense of hope for people and communities. We would argue for much more investment in communities and public services including youth services – but currently they’re all about tackling crime and less about the actual social causes.”
“Recent research from the CPP shows the damaging effect of local crime levels on healthy life expectancy, which in turn undermines opportunity for investment, productivity and prosperity within our communities,” she told. “But Labour should do more to push back against the ‘forces of conservatism’ that keep a stronghold on this debate.
She said that a focus on prosperity and a fair plan for economic growth would underpin the crime policies, adding: “Without this, Starmer will be just as guilty of the sloganeering, sticking plaster politics he accuses of the Conservatives.”
