“Comments on our appearance seem to have an extra degree of malignancy, they seep into our psyches, then lock into place, making them almost impossible to extract,” writes Anita Bhagwandas.
While some children might see themselves – or somebody quite like them – in these figures, for so many, it imparts a different message: you aren’t the ideal, and you’ll never be beautiful. By the age of 12, we’re armed with the ability to take feedback of many kinds and turn it inwards, which can become what psychologists term our “core beliefs”.
But can you ever rewrite those formative experiences and build healthier self-esteem as an adult? Some psychologists believe that self-esteem is hard-wired into us, and there’s little we can do to improve it. Increasingly, though, many believe that we can shift our early beliefs thanks to neuroplasticity, or the brain’s ability to change over time.
When I delved into the history of how thinness became so embedded in Western culture, for example, I learned just how much it was linked to colonisation thanks to books like Sabrina Strings’s. During Britain’s colonial reign from the 16th century to the 20th century, prominent thinkers and artists sought to distinguish Eurocentric beauty from others, and to elevate whiteness as the ultimate ideal – particularly in the 1800s.
