The Jedi gravely misinterpreted the signs in thinking Count Dooku was the Sith Lord pulling the strings behind the Clone Wars, but they were wrong.
Palpatine was able to conquer the galaxy from the shadows throughout Star Wars thanks in large part to the actions of his apprentice, Count Dooku. First introduced in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, played by the late Sir Christopher Lee, Dooku was among the most capable Sith Lords, yet compared to his peers, he’s been relatively underserved.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace first introduced the Sith to the canon. They had been in hiding for a millennium since their near extinction in the Jedi-Sith War, surviving in the shadows and concealing their return from the Jedi, possibly using dark side powers to hide. The Jedi only learned of the Sith's existence when Qui-Gon Jinn encountered Darth Maul on Tatooine, and Dooku was still a Jedi Master at the time.
With Dooku as the Separatist leader, he was the perfect fit to be the Sith Lord as well. He was the Jedi’s central enemy, and they believed his death would end the war. This diverted any attention from the person truly responsible, Palpatine. The Jedi had no inclination to believe Palpatine could have been so evil and not simply an ambitious and selfish politician, but they certainly did for Dooku. He was a former Jedi Master, one of the few who left of their own accord.
The Jedi Believed Ventress Was The New Sith Apprentice The Jedi’s mentality regarding Dooku extended to fellow dark side characters, Maul and Asaaj Ventress. In Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir, they believed Maul to be Dooku’s apprentice, and so when Ventress came into play during the Clone Wars, they assumed the same about her.
She may be an incredibly popular character, but there's little chance Ventress could return in canon. Christie Golden's canon novel Dark Disciple - based on unmade episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars - describes her return to the light and heroic sacrifice protecting her lover, Quinlan Voss, from Dooku. By then, the Jedi had learned of Darth Sidious' existence and thus that Dooku was but the apprentice - Ventress only ever an assassin. However, it was already too late.
