'Red COVID' did not exist in California until after April 2021.

A protester holds an anti-vaccination sign as supporters of President Donald Trump rally to reopen California as the coronavirus pandemic continues to worsen, on May 16, 2020 in Woodland Hills, California.phenomenon, or the fact that during the COVID-19 pandemic, death rates tend to be higher in counties won by former President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election than in counties won by President Joe Biden.

In California specifically,"Red COVID" exists — but only after April 2021 when the COVID-19 vaccines became widely available. Counties that voted for Biden in the 2020 presidential election typically have higher vaccination rates than counties that voted for Trump, and the COVID-19 vaccine is highly effective at protecting against severe disease and death.

The trend line is weakly positive, with red counties typically having higher death rates. However, of the five California counties with the highest death rates over the entirety of the pandemic , four were won by Biden. Those four counties all have large Latino populations, and the high deaths rates illustrate the disparate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the state.
