You mentioned that you feel a greater sense of joy now being out of America. Is that something that it took you a moment to get used to?Oh God, absolutely. In the book I write about the simple things, like saying “good morning” to my neighbor or simply being acknowledged in my daily life. I recognized early on when I moved back to Trinidad and Tobago that that was something I wasn’t accustomed to. It felt like an intrusion to have people even see me and acknowledge me.
When you look at things now, about a year or so out from the Trump presidency, do you see that anything has changed?No, I don't. Quite frankly I am more on edge about America than I ever was because the stakes are much higher now. There’s the looming economic crisis and the pandemic that has yet to be contained. Every day I put on the news where I listen to stories about fascism and voting rights being attacked. That has serious implications for the next election.
