America is getting older. That’s one big takeaway from newly released data from the Census Bureau.

A family household is one with two or more people related by blood, marriage or adoption. Roommates and unmarried partners are not counted as families.People who live alone—about 35 million Americans—are also a non-family household. They make up 28% of the total, up from 27% in 2010 and 25% in 1990.
But if you add the growing ranks of cohabiting couples—also known as unmarried partners, both opposite-sex and same-sex—coupled households still make up a slender majority: 53%. And coupled households with kids under 18 make up 20% of households.Same-sex married couples made up 0.5% of the nation’s nearly 127 million households in 2020, five years after the Supreme Court legalized such unions nationwide. Same-sex unmarried partners made up 0.4%.
. That data only offered race and ethnicity totals and adult totals. Meanwhile, planning for the 2030 census has already begun.
