Khyati Sundaram, 37, became the CEO of a hiring platform in 2020 When she gave birth to her son and was forced to take a step back from work for the first time in years She tells ellieapeake how she avoids burnout ⬇️

Returning to work two months ago was great. I love my work so it was good to return, but it’s also tricky leaving the baby. I was given some helpful advice by other new mothers. Society puts a lot of pressure on us. Completely disregard “mother’s guilt”. That really helped me get through the first day back.

It was really hard being away from my son, but my husband took some time off to help me ease back in, so I knew my child would be in safe hands. My husband was there day in and day out for two weeks as I transitioned back into work. You need that support system.I try to go out to lunch with everyone. I also try to do coffee chats with both the leadership team and other members of the wider company. Right now, with the economy, it’s important for me to keep everyone’s morale up.

I try extremely hard to do at least 30 minutes of exercise on my lunch break, just to manage my stress. This was something that I always did before myIf I can’t go out for a run, I will do a short online yoga session. It really helps to break the day down, especially if I’m waking up at four or five every morning.5pm

I aim to commute home so I can be with the baby. Before I became a mother, I used to work anything from 12-hour to 14-hour days but you just can’t do that with a newborn. I think a misconception is that leaving at a flexible time means you don’t prioritise work. If you are choosing to leave work to go and see your child’s play, you aren’t less dedicated. That attitude negatively affects mothers. We should accept that everyone is an adult, and people will always pick up the work and get it done. Finishing up your work after hours doesn’t mean you don’t prioritise work. That school play is only happening once.
