Houston company hopes for big lift: Renewable, carbon-capture battery power for big trucks, buses
Solid Ox Motors Founder and CEO Jared Moore talks about his business and idea of powering buses and trucks with solid oxide fuel cells Friday, Nov. 18, 2022, at Greentown Labs in Houston. The company is considering how with a little boost of solid oxide fuel cells, the big batteries that will power buses and heavy trucks and maybe one day cars and pickups can not only transition drivers away from fossil fuels, but capture carbon emissions as well.
The idea, if it takes off, has the potential to solve several issues with the development of electric vehicles, particularly in the transport industry, Moore said. Trucking and bus companies have the same anxiety some early EV adopters had for their personal cars, but on a larger scale: long distances and costly options for recharging an entire fleet of vehicles.
Ethanol is readily available in the United States. while methanol is plentiful in Europe. Either can activate solid oxide fuel cells and generate the power for an electric vehicle, Moore said. All batteries are a stored chemical reaction that can hold onto the energy and convert it to electricity. In conventional AA or AAA batteries it is a one-time use, while lead-acid batteries in cars allow for recharging by running an electrical current through them.
“The H in H-town stands for many things, one of which is hydrogen,” said Jason Ethier, senior director of membership for Greentown.between Mont Belvieu and PortHouston.
