'Disturbing the Peace' blends poetry, storytelling and performance in two performances this weekend
For “Disturbing the Peace” he will perform along with other Houston poets as they perform their poems accompanied by what Palmore describes as “stylized scenes” employing the theatrical elements of sound and light as a way to “bring the poetry into the theater world” including a “collection of poets I admire creating a live visual to go with their poems.
Performing poetry in this vein “is something poets are not used to,” Palmore says, adding that such performances “haven’t been called theater.” He describes the show as “a collection of vignettes.” Although “each poem has its own weight all are connected through music, transitions, lights. In a way, it is three or four plays in one. Yet all in one play, whether the focus is on family issues, police violence against unarmed black men—a spectrum of issues.
