As Philadelphia Eagles starting quarterback Jalen Hurts prepares to face the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII on Sunday, our reporters spoke with some of the high school coaches who faced off against the former Channelview star.“In two years, we never touched the guy,” the Clear Creek head football coach said. “I’m dead serious. Never touched him. In two years.”
Lane said Hurts played with the Franco Harris mentality of taking care of his body and not absorbing unnecessary hits. “When I see him doing it now, it doesn’t shock me. I tell his dad that Jalen’s not surprising anybody that’s ever played against him.” It took former Deer Park coach Chris Massey about two plays in the fall of 2013 to realize that Hurts would evolve into a four-year nightmare for the Deer.
Massey said he approached Hurts after the game to offer his congratulations for a fourth and final time over a stellar career.“I don’t know if he was really doing this, but I said, ‘Jalen, quit teasing my guys. You run just fast enough to where they think they’re going to catch you, and then you just put it in another gear when you need to.’
At the time, Flanigan was entering his third year at West Brook, which had just made the jump to Class 6A. The 2014-15 Bruins were 2-3 entering October and were hoping to snap a three-game losing streak heading into a matchup against Channelview and Hurts, who was a junior.
