A bipartisan group of House members is set to reintroduce a bill that would increase funding for local police departments to preserve officer safety and increase training for violence de-escalation tactics.

The bill is being led by Reps. Josh Gottheimer , John Rutherford , Steven Horsford , and Anthony D’Esposito and has already garnered the support of 44 co-sponsors,A majority of those co-sponsors are Democrats, with at least 11 of those running for reelection in swing districts in 2024. The legislation offers a chance for members of both parties to distance themselves from calls on both sides of the aisle to defund certain law enforcement agencies, especially ahead of a crucial election cycle.
