The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee reported raising $17 million in June, bringing its second-quarter haul to $40.7 million.

The DCCC’s fundraising was fueled by $9 million in contributions from small grassroots donors in June, the same month that the Supreme Court issued its ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturning Roe v. Wade and eliminating federal protections for abortion rights. With $121.5 million in cash on hand as of July 1, House Democrats appear to be accumulating sufficient resources to defend their thin five-seat majority in the midterm elections.

The DCCC has never raised more money in the second quarter of an election year. But if campaign cash equaled political prospects, the Democratic Party’s House majority would be secure — and that is not the case. President Joe Biden’s ratings have fallen below 40% in many recent polls, and Republicans enjoy a narrow advantage on the generic congressional ballot, signaling a GOP electoral wave continues to develop.

Democrats are hoping that Dobbs will energize grassroots Democrats and reverse the Republicans’ edge among crucial independent voters. But thus far, little evidence is available to show that is happening, although GOP strategists worry the overturning of Roe could cause their party a problem in 2024. Surveys show skyrocketing inflation remains far and away the voters’ top issue, and news on that front is unlikely to change things.Inflation accelerated to an explosive 9.
