Astros third baseman is driving force behind Bregman Family Racing which now owns eight horses and recently had a second-place finish on Keeneland’s turf track.
Post time arrived about 40 minutes before first pitch against the Rangers, putting Alex Bregman’s two passions into one pressurized hour. A crowd of 15 Astros gathered around his locker in the visiting clubhouse at Globe Life Field on April 28. Cadillac Candy came around the final turn in fourth place.
Jockey Tyler Gaffalione guided Bregman’s horse out of a cluster and onto the outside of the pack. Cadillac Candy showed the burst every owner wants at the finish, surging to within a few lengths of the race leader. Teammates around Bregman’s locker “started going nuts,” he said.Cadillac Candy finished second in a 5½-furlong race on Keeneland’s turf track. Consider it a formal introduction for Bregman Family Racing.
“Sure enough, the first horse he races comes in second. Now he’s just got to keep trying to figure out how to win the next race, right? As he is, because no one is more competitive than Alex.” Sam grew up going to Pimlico with his father, Stan, a prominent Washington lawyer who once represented the Washington Senators.
