Garrett Wade performs during the Uvalde Strong benefit concert Sunday, June 12, 2022, at Graff 7A Ranch in Hondo, Texas.HONDO — Tony Andrews breathed a sigh of relief Sunday afternoon when he finally reached Uvalde Strong: A Texas Country Concert — a benefit for the families affected by the Robb Elementary School shooting.
, he decided to channel his strength into his legs. He left Austin at 8 a.m. Tuesday — on foot, followed by a safety vehicle — and completed his 123-mile trek Sunday when he limped into the Graff 7A Ranch Dance Hall in Hondo, just about 40 miles up the road from Uvalde. “This,” for Andrews, is putting one foot in front of the other, on pavement, in the triple-digit heat, both to raise awareness for the families left to pick up the pieces and to put a spotlight on mental health.
Mental illness “affects everybody,” said Andrews, of Enid, Oklahoma. “It’s OK to not be OK, and it’s OK to talk about it.”Andrews was applauded by the people who attended the all-day concert, which featured 10 acts from around the Texas country music scene. The first performers did acoustic set rotations, from noon to 5 p.m., and a full-band schedule kicked off at 5 p.m.A poster reading “UvaldeRadio.
