The top U.S. auto-safety regulator is investigating whether 1.7 million SUVs made by Honda should be recalled, after receiving several reports of vehicles losing power at high speeds

Motor Co. should be recalled, after receiving several reports of vehicles losing power at high speeds.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a filing made public this week that it was launching the probe in response to several reports filed by Honda of vehicles allegedly losing power at highway speed without warning. The examination covers 1.72 million Honda CR-V and HR-V vehicles, including model years 2018-2022, the NHTSA said.

The field reports allege that the vehicles experienced a rear differential lockup as a result of leakage, which caused the drive shaft to fracture, the NHTSA said. The safety regulator said it was opening the investigation to determine the scope and severity of the potential problem and to assess possible safety-related issues.

Honda said Tuesday that it is aware the NHTSA is looking into reports related to the rear differentials of CR-V and HR-V vehicles equipped with all-wheel drive. The auto maker said it would cooperate with the investigation as it continues its own review. The number of incidents that were reported or when they might have occurred couldn’t be learned. The Japanese auto maker declined to say how many reports it has filed related to the alleged problem.Catch up on the headlines, understand the news and make better decisions, free in your inbox every day.Federal law requires manufacturers to submit field reports and complaints to the NHTSA about incidents involving their vehicles.
