Sure you can cut back on Starbucks runs, cancel a few subscriptions, or skip a few brunch outings. But some Houston-area homeowners are able to save a bit now by paying part of their property taxes later.
This applies only to homeowners whose taxes are not paid through escrow. The Chronicle examined the payment options from all nine Houston county tax offices. Here's a rundown of their options.In Austin County, only residents over 65 and or disabled are eligible for a penalty-free exemption on their account. For other residents, if taxes are not paid by Jan. 31, interest and penalties occur beginning Feb.
, residents do not have the option to make split or partial payments. All taxes are due by Jan. 31 and residential homestead payment plans are set up on delinquent accounts only beginning on Feb. 1.Residents in Galveston County can split their tax bill in half as long as they pay the first half by Nov. 30, then the second half is not due until June 30 without penalty or interest, according to itsThe Harris County Tax Office has not adopted either the late discount or split payment options.
"Beginning on February 1st, the Tax Code allows Tax Assessor-Collectors to start setting up payment plans for up to 36 months on any remaining balance," she said via email."For homeowners, payment plans have a reduced penalty calculation per the tax code. These accounts only accrue 1% interest per month plus the initial penalty month.
