The figures mean that for the week when the barge was occupied in August, the accommodation cost more than £7,300 per person a week.

A Refugee Council spokesperson said the Home Office was spending “huge amounts of money and causing undue misery to people who have come to our country to find safety.” Tim Naor Hilton, chief executive of Refugee Action, said the figures were “a further reminder that it’s time the Government funded local authorities to run the system on a not-for-profit basis and spent every penny of this public money on protectingA Home Office spokesperson said: “The number of people arriving in the UK who require accommodation has reached record levels and is adding to the pressures facing the asylum system.
