The Home Office has paid for the funerals of six people who died during or after stays in British immigration detention centres over the past five years 🔴 Exclusive from mollyblackall

The organisation made a damages offer and settled the case before it went in front of a judge, and the inquest later concluded that there was a series of failings by Mitie. A jury at West London Coroner’s Court found that authorities had missed “significant warning signs” and there was a “systemic failure”.

Lawyers also suggested that families often had to demand the funds from the Home Office and that this was not offered or outlined upfront. . But people can also be detained in conventional prisons under immigration powers, usually after finishing a criminal sentence. These records do not include those who died while being held solely under immigration powers in conventional prisons, rather than designated immigration detention centres. These are normally individuals who are held under immigration powers following the completion of a criminal sentence.

He was working regularly in hospitality but had also acquired a criminal record. By 2017, he had 18 criminal convictions, according to Home Office paperwork about his detention, and had been registered on the sex offenders register in 2012 following a sexual assault. Ms Sanderson and Mr Zdravkovic’s lawyers dispute this, saying that he worked regularly throughout his time in London, predominantly in hospitality in which he had a degree, and that he had been briefly between jobs at the time of his arrest in mid-January because of the seasonality of the hospitality industry.

Mr Zdravkovic’s history with alcohol was not elicited from him during his reception, which occurred at 4am, his lawyer said. According to his lawyers, Mr Zdravkovic began expressing suicidal thoughts just three days after he arrived, but this was not recorded in the correct care system by detention officers. He was twice segregated in the Verne’s care unit, but returned to his residential wing with observations reduced to just two days after his second referral.

Once the Home Office agreed to pay for the funeral, Ms Sanderson said their service was “really good”. She was able to say goodbye to her partner at a funeral parlour in Heathrow, before his body was cremated and flown to his native Slovenia. His ashes were buried in his hometown on 5 June, 2017. The figures raise questions about the conditions and mental health support available during immigration detention, which has no fixed length of time. In 2018, the British Medical Association expressed its support for immigration detention to be “phased out” and replaced with more “humane means of monitoring individuals facing removal from the UK.”
