A home on the North Shore of Oahu collapsed onto the beach early Monday morning.
It seemed like only a matter of time, as beachfront residents have been dealing with progressively severe“I walked out there 12 at night ... I looked at it I was like, man, it’s never gonna stop,” tenant Hugo VillalobosVillalobos was sleeping at a different house on property that night so he was uninjured. He had been living in the one-story home, now resting at a 45-degree-angle on the beach, for 30 years.
“We feel bad for the homeowner and everybody who lives along this stretch. This has been a long time coming. We knew it was going to happen eventually,” Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources Chair Suzanne Case said. “This is sad … climate change, sea level rise, and wave energy in new powerful patterns,” Case continued. “This is a beach that’s important to everyone. The houses are built on sand berms and there’s just no way they can last long-term. We continue to encourage the homeowners to seek other alternatives.”
