Home Bargains has opened a telephone hotline for customers to provide information
A major retailer is offering shoppers rewards of up to £500 if they help catch shoplifters. Home Bargains has opened a confidential telephone hotline where customers can provide 'any information' about a theft or crime in one of its stores.
Posters have also reportedly gone up across some of the retailer's 580 UK stores telling customers they could get rewards if they provide information which would help lead to the “arrest and successful prosecution of anyone committing a criminal offence in our stores", the Mirror reports. Home Bargains warns potential shoplifters that its stores all have CCTV cameras and anyone caught stealing will face automatic prosecution, either by the police or through civil action by the retailer, the Telegraph reports. Shoppers in one of its stores in Liverpool are also covered by more than 30 cameras across the site. The poster reads: "Even if not caught at the time, we use this CCTV evidence to pursue shoplifters after they have left the store.
The move comes amid a rise in shoplifting. The latest figures from the British Retail Consortium show crime cost retailers in the UK more than £1 billion a year. Some shops have now added security tags on dairy and meat products including cheese, lamb, steaks, chicken and mince. Alcohol, razor blades and electronic appliances have been security tagged for some time.
