Ground-handling staff are facing a 12-week wait to complete vetting – six to 10 weeks for security clearance and another two for airport checks, bosses at the ground-handling firm Menzies said.: “It’s still a challenge that we’re pushing the Government quite hard to try and accelerate that process because it’s quite a lengthy time.”
Before the pandemic, clearances usually took between four and five weeks, executives at Menzies told the newspaper.: “The Government should have learned its lesson from last year’s summer of disruption. It promised to speed up processing times for security clearances at airports but it hasn’t gone far enough in turning around applications as speedily as possible.
“Britain needs to prove that its airports are efficient and very much open for business, both to UK and international travellers, so let’s see the Government commit to faster turnaround times urgently. “It needs to reassure airports, ground handlers and airlines, that it’s got enough officials on the job to issue enough passes well ahead of the summer peak.”
