The movie stars Glen Powell as Gary, a college professor who secretly pretends to be a hitman and uses various aliases to survive. The story generally follows Gary's decision to break away from his life as an undercover spy after meeting Madison, a woman who begs to have her husband killed.
In an interview with TODAY.com, Powell explained the meaning behind the movie's optimistic ending. With Gary agreeing to support Madison by killing a fellow police officer, the pair are able to live a peaceful life together as a married couple with children. In Powell's opinion, it gave Gary the chance to live as the man he always wanted to be, rather than hiding behind an old identity.
