For 75 years, Ranchman’s has been a place for rodeo cowboys, bankers and anybody in between.
As the story goes, a woman named Pete opened a steakhouse in downtown Ponder in 1948.
She was a tough woman to work for, and Ross would know, because he did it for a series of years in 1978 and 1985 before he bought the restaurant in 1992. When Grace “Pete” Jackson ran the restaurant, “you’d cut your own steaks, wash your own dishes and mop the floors,” Ross says. “She was too frugal to hire anyone else.”
“I just hated it when the cafeteria reopened,” says Tressa Williams, a longtime Ranchman’s customer who graduated from Ponder High in 1966.
