An investigation has been launched after a heritage-listed grade II church in north-west London was destroyed by a fire overnight
Vicar Kate Harrison, who took over St Mark’s congregation in 2015, was evacuated from her vicarage home and watched as the flames took hold.: “The firefighters were absolutely amazing and they worked so hard. I’m really touched for the amount of effort they put in for this building, they were so kind and wonderful.”
St Mark’s is described as an “architectural and historical treasure” by the National Churches Trust and listed as a grade-II Victorian church.The entire Grade II listed building was destroyed in the blaze The church contained “stunning” mosaics by the Salviati family, one of the most prominent families that shaped the city of Florence between the 15th and 16th century.
It also featured highly decorative marble flooring in the chancel and had an overall Gothic-styled design created by architect Thomas Cundy Junior. It was located near Abbey Road Studios and Lord’s Cricket Ground, and had links to author Lewis Carroll and Queen Victoria’s son Prince Leopold.
